SLA Board Votes to Change Student Membership Dues

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the SLA Board of Directors voted to:

  1. approve a change in dues for student membership from $10 to $50 effective immediately
  2. lower the required number of courses to be considered a student member for part-time students from two to one

Right now, SLA is at a critical juncture in what it offers in terms of membership benefits. Since the beginning of the year, we have announced a number of programs and services that are available to student members. That includes:

  • Discounts and access to scholarships to our exciting annual conference
  • A renewed and revitalized Information Outlook magazine
  • Access to the knowledge and experience of our communities
  • The opportunity to apply for a $5,000 tuition scholarship

The new pricing model puts SLA more in line with like organizations, making us more competitive. The $10 pricing model undervalued what we offer our student members and the increase in price will allow SLA to continue to expand services for them.

Please note that the board also expanded the definition of who qualifies for student membership. Part-time students taking one or more courses per semester now qualify for student status. This will open up membership to a wider pool and acknowledges the reality that many people take classes one at-a-time while working other jobs and/or caregiving
